The Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) is an underappreciated asset of Sinclair College. The TLC offers free tutoring for Sinclair students. They tutor over 200 classes, including English as a Second Language (ESL). On a tour given by Eugene Oswald, Supervisor of LCS/BPS and the Writing Lab, he showed how big the TLC is, despite being tucked away in a small corner of the Library.

Sinclair’s TLC is located in the southwest corner of Sinclair Library, under the bell tower. While seemingly small, it is made up of over 20 staff members dedicated to helping students succeed in their courses. This group holds both faculty and Sinclair students and alumni.
Tutors are available for appointments through the week in the students’ Navigate 360 account or at https://sinclair.navigate.eab.com/

During the tour, Oswald mentioned that it is a more efficient use of time when students are a little more thoughtful while filling out the form to schedule a tutoring appointment. When a student gets to the part of the form that says “comments,” it is more helpful if they provide more information than just “for a paper” or “for an assignment.”

Using specifics, such as what chapter and lesson a student needs help with or specific questions they need help answering, can help tutoring appointments go much smoother. Students can also have tutoring appointments multiple times a week.
The TLC recognizes that they cannot meet the needs of every student and that’s where the coaching to complete tech workshop, located on the upper level of the Library, comes in. This team helps students with non-course-specific issues, such as time management, or guides them through eLearn. Meetings are available via face-to-face meetings, Zoom meetings and email.
The TLC also offers a Writing Lab. Instead of meeting with someone from the TLC, you can send an email to writinglab@sinclair.edu for someone to look over or review and help with essays, research projects and other writing assignments. Click here for more resources from the Writing Lab.
Along with free tutoring, the TLC offers labs where students can meet with a tutor, receive free resources for projects, and see models, as well as work with other students on assignments.
