Choosing a major is an important decision, influenced by career goals, personal interests, life experiences, and external influences. At Sinclair Community College, students pursue a variety of fields, each with their own unique motivations and aspirations. Here are some of Sinclair students’ majors, the reasons why they chose these majors, and what they like about them.

“I chose this major because I wanted to build on my engineering background and manage my family business more effectively,” Islam said. “The supply chain really appeals to me because it’s relevant to every industry, covering everything from raw materials to the final product.”

I also like that I’m learning something new every day because I enjoy building relationships with new people. Plus, my communication skills are improving, which is essential for my goal of working in international business.”

“I chose my major because I saw there was a need, and because of some hard times in my family, nursing seemed like a good career to pursue. I felt it was the right career for me. It’s definitely hard, especially physiology because there’s just so much to memorize, but I’m enjoying the program.”

Jack DiTallo – Major: Computer Science

“I chose my major because I’ve always loved computers, but more than anything, I like the problemsolving aspect to it. I love the challenge of figuring out how to make things work,” DiTallo said.  “I really enjoy learning different programming languages like C++ and Java.”

My professor really dives into the ‘why’ behind object-oriented programming, which is awesome and I love that feeling when you’re experimenting with code and it clicks. I’m excited about the future and about what I can create with code. I think I’m on the right path.”

Mathew Kurkat Kiprop – Major: Nursing

“It wasn’t my first choice,” Kiprop said.  “I initially wanted to do computer science, but my family and friends, especially my sister, suggested nursing because of the many doors it would open for me and because she knew my character.”

I’ve always wanted to help people, like a doctor or a preacher, so I saw nursing as an opportunity to do that because I believe we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. I really like my major. I’m in my second year here at Sinclair, and I plan to get my bachelor’s degree in nursing so I can move into administration.”

“It is a combination of computer science and automation technology. I was originally an electrical engineering major, but I switched for several reasons. First, a 4-year program is more affordable at Sinclair than other colleges. Second, the degree focuses less on mathematics and theory and instead has more hands-on classes. And last but not least, robots are cool and the professors connected to this degree are fun people and wonderful mentors.”
