Things may be buzzing for Sinclair in downtown Dayton, but that is also true for the college’s satellite campuses.

Latonia Peak-Brown and Bob Noss work at the Centerville campus and are in charge of bringing students on to help make sure everything runs smoothly. They spoke to The Clarion about Centerville’s student workers and their impact.

Students who work at this campus help “across the board,” said Noss. They may be responsible for giving directions at the door, scheduling student appointments with advisors, or even assisting with technology.

Noss mentioned that the Centerville campus often has construction projects taking place, which often diverts their time and attention. Student ambassadors are there to fill in those gaps.

Business typically picks up at the beginning of each semester when welcome events are hosted. The workplace may be a bit more chaotic during midterms and finals as well, with the campus providing ways for students to relax and de-stress.

However, even when they have downtime, Noss and Peak-Brown expect that their student workers continue to be involved and engaged.

Ultimately, though, Noss said that it is up to the student what they get out of the position.

The two supervisors stated that Centerville has seen a “wide variety” of student employees. One student had the goal of opening a business and felt they could learn valuable skills from working there. Noss added that student positions are a great start for those who want to work in higher education.

Centerville encourages their student workers to collaborate with others on the team and share any ideas they may have. Employees that are also students provide a unique perspective that may be helpful within the campus meetings, and they can expect that support and guidance will be returned.

Not only is working at the Centerville campus an opportunity to earn money, but it is also a chance for students to see more of the community. Each satellite campus has its own look, feel and overall environment – something students may not get to experience otherwise.

Thank you, Centerville, for being part of the Student Employment Series by The Clarion!
