Are you interested in getting involved in Esports at Sinclair? Whether you’re a competitive gamer, or a casual gamer, the TARTAN GAMERS is the perfect club to have fun with after a long day of study. They play a wide variety of games which helps all to feel welcome and able to find a game they’re interested in playing. Overwatch, League of Legends, Halo, Super Smash Bros, Smite, Valorant, Apex Legends, and Rocket League are some of the most popular games among the TARTAN GAMERS.

The first eSports tournament ever was held in 1978, though it didn’t rise to popularity until 2002 with the launch of Major League Gaming (MLG). Today, competitive Esports are immensely popular. According to Esports.net, research done in 2021 showed that Esports viewership in the U.S. was 84 million which surpasses many sports including Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the National Hockey League (NHL). In fact, the National Football League (NFL) is the only sport that surpasses Esports which had about 141 million viewers in that year.

In an engaging interview with Avery Vanhoose, the current president of the TARTAN GAMERS, he relayed that they currently have one competitive Esports team and would like to build two more competitive teams so that the TARTAN GAMERS of Sinclair would be able to compete against other campuses. About this welcoming student club and community, Vanhoose said, “It’s a melting pot of platforms and games. For anyone who has any level of passion or love for video games, this is definitely the club for you. The goal is to not only build an esports team for our campus, but also to offer community. The fact that there’s an entire club out there dedicated to a passion for gaming and building community, spoke to me.”

They do most of their meetings virtually so that members can meet from the comfort of their home and fit it into their schedules. Vanhoose expressed that he wanted to help provide extracurricular activities for students that in a way that really speaks to them. “It’s all about competition and community,” he said.
