Sinclair has a lot to offer. Here’s a list of five unique programs in Sinclair’s Liberal Arts, Communication & Social Sciences department.

1. Dance

Have you ever wanted to learn to dance, but thought it was way too late to do so? With this class, you can learn the basics of many different dance styles, including ballet, modern dance, jazz dance, tap dance and Middle Eastern. This class accepts students with all levels of experience, so go ahead and “just dance!”

2. English as a second language (ESL)

Is English not your first language? Don’t worry, with these classes you can improve your understanding of the English language with 3 levels of ESL: high beginning, intermediate, and advanced. This program will help you with almost all aspects of the English language, including listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar.

3. Social work

Social workers help those who need assistance with mental issues, physical issues, behavioral issues, substance use disorders, family relationships, child welfare and much more. Social workers act like advocates as they educate and teach skills that are essential to help their clients. Social workers help their clients to deal with any problems that they may be currently facing or have faced. Students can expect to learn writing and math skills in their first year. During this year, students will understand psychological and sociological theories and how they relate to human function.

In the second year, students will be able to perform social work activities in a practicum setting and will be able to work alongside organizations that provide services to the diverse population in the community.

4. Geography

Do you enjoy being outside, looking at maps and solving problems on the fly? Geography is the program for you! In this field, you’ll learn about the physical and human world that revolves around us every day and how they shape the world we know today. Geography is involved in the study of climate change, wildlife and in city planning. In the field, technologies such as mapping, 3D modeling, and drones are often used. Students in this program have the benefit of working with community partners to help create plans for local planning projects. Partnerships exist with Dayton’s Community and Planning Department, Five Rivers MetroParks and the Dayton Collaboratory. Projects range from “Mapping Ecological Corridors in Northeast Dayton” to conducting a walkability study of downtown Dayton.

If you are interested or have questions to ask, contact Chair of the Geography department, Dana Johnson.

5. Theatre

Have you ever thought of working in theatre, film or in creative environments? Sinclair’s Theatre program offers opportunities to those who are interested.  If your interests involve performing, lighting, make-up, sound, scenery, or stage management then this is the program for you. You’ll see first-hand what theatre looks like as you participate in some of the many theatre productions at Sinclair. You’ll also see what it takes to manage a production. The Theatre department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). This organization is a body of schools, conservatories, colleges, and universities that establish the standards for theatre degrees.  If this program sounds like it might be a fit, contact the chair of the Theater and Dance department, Gina Neuerer.
