Though Sinclair largely employs people who have already obtained one or multiple degrees, those are not the only people the college hires. Students also have the opportunity to work at Sinclair while still taking classes. This article is the beginning of our Student Employment Series, which will give readers information on the various employment opportunities on campus.
The Sinclair Physical Activities Center (PAC) is located in Building 8 and is known for the pool (closed for the fall 2022 semester), hosting non-credit physical education classes, and being the site of some of Sinclair’s past events. The Clarion spoke to Travis Beetley, manager, and Mary Coleman, supervisor, about what students can expect from working at the PAC.
There are a variety of different student positions available at the PAC, including weightroom supervision, activity assistance, and lifeguard duty. Beetley and Coleman stated that there is also the potential for students to participate in “special projects” based on their majors or interests, such as managing membership sales. Students do not need to have knowledge of sports to be hired at the PAC but can gain basic knowledge through their work. To take a position, though, students must meet Sinclair’s general student employment requirements.
Beetley and Coleman were enthusiastic about the fact that PAC student employees will learn skills “you can’t get from a classroom.” Employees will have frequent interactions with other people and develop organizational skills.
The two said that, because the PAC is a relatively small department, there is a “family feel” to it. Students are scheduled for, on average, 10-12 hours per week with the possibility downtime that they can use to study. Those who work at the PAC are encouraged to work together and fill in for each other when needed.
Before applying, students should be aware of not only their schedule but their eligibility as well.
Student employees help keep the PAC up, running, and available for the Sinclair community to use and enjoy. Beetley and Coleman emphasized that they try to do whatever they can to show appreciation for their student workers and do not ask them to “do anything we wouldn’t do.”
The PAC is currently hiring for the fall semester but will still accept applications even after positions are filled.
Coleman suggested that any interested students should visit the PAC to fill out an application and their availability. Contact can also be made by email (mary.coleman@sinclair.edu) or telephone (937-512-2730 or 937-512-2968).
