Sinclair regularly hosts free Sinclair Talks at its Downtown Dayton campus. These talks are also being broadcasted on Zoom.

Sinclair Talks are open to the public and cover a myriad of topics. Local personalities and historians share their findings and opinions, and student clubs and organizations can use this forum to inform the campus at large of their activities. Attendees use these talks to learn more about what the college offers and students use them to share their passions, knowledge, and opinions.

Crystal Ford Bingle, the Coordinator of Community Engagement at Sinclair, organizes and schedules Sinclair Talks. Students, staff, faculty, and community members can submit proposals to Student and Community Engagement. Talks often take the form of a presentation, panel discussion, or workshop. According to Bingle, they will begin accepting proposals for the fall term halfway through this term in March.

The next talk is a workshop on emotional intelligence. Lindsay Tate from Sinclair Workforce Development will facilitate. Emotional intelligence is often compared and contrasted with IQ. It involves elements of empathy and emotional control. Those with high emotional intelligence can use it to successfully manage their emotions in a way that helps them communicate more effectively.

By working on our emotional intelligence, we can see growth in our lives and our careers. In a survey of over 2600 human resources professionals, 71% valued emotional intelligence more than IQ in an employee. 75% preferred promoting someone with high emotional intelligence over someone with a high IQ.

“I want [people] to understand what emotional intelligence is,” Tate says. “It is not fixed. It is something they can improve on and grow throughout their life.”

An up-to-date list of this term’s Sinclair Talks can be found on the Student and Community Engagement website. On this list, students can find a Zoom link to each upcoming talk.
