Sinclair Community College is asking its student body to participate in a Healthy Minds Study designed by JED Campus. The purpose of this survey is focused on student health and wellbeing.
This survey is designed to help universities across America help narrow down which areas students are struggling within mental health and home situations to be able to better tackle these issues.
Sinclair first teamed up with JED Campus, which is based out of Ann Arbor, Mich., in the fall of 2021. This is the first time this survey has been available to Sinclair and teaming up with JED Campus “made it possible,” according to Alicia Schroeder, who is the Director of Student Affairs.
The survey itself takes about 25 minutes to complete and asks a variety of questions from food security to mental health and substance use.
“The main goal is to help reduce stigma and decide what our faculty needs to focus on within the student body,” said Lorrie Spivey, who is the Manager of Accessibility and Counseling Services. “Overall, we want to meet the needs of our entire campus.”
To help encourage students to complete the survey, participating students will be automatically entered into a sweepstake for one of two $500 prizes or one of ten $100 prizes. The nationwide drawing will be conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health in Ann Arbor in the summer of 2022.
Sinclair is also offering a reward specifically for Sinclair students, which is a $250 Kroger gift card that two students will receive.
Winners will be notified by email once the drawing is complete and instructed on how to claim their prize.
“Having your voice heard is most important so we as faculty know what students need to succeed, not only in school but in the community as well,” Spivey said.
As of late last week, almost 1,000 students had participated in the survey. The deadline to complete the survey is Monday, Feb. 14. If students are interested in completing this survey they can find more details about it here. It is also stressed that all personal information will remain confidential, and participants must be 18-years-old to participate.
