Sinclair Talks: What’s Happened and What’s to Come

Sinclair Talks are a series of events every month, where Sinclair invites people in the Ohio area or even students to speak about any topic they wish to discuss, similar to a TEDTalk.

There are five Sinclair Talks coming up this semester.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 5 – Diversity, Inclusion, Mental Health and You!
  • Tuesday, Oct. 19 – Green Dot – Changing campus Culture One at a Time
  • Wednesday, Nov. 3 – Food Insecurity and the Effects in the Classroom
  • Wednesday, Nov. 17 – Our Mission to Help: Veteran Homelessness and Food Insecurity
  • Wednesday, Dec. 1 – Holidays Around the World

Most of the upcoming Sinclair Talks cover tough but important issues like mental health, poverty, homelessness, hunger, and sexual assault/harassment. There is only one talk where the discussion is a bit lighter.

‘‘The [Holidays Around the World] presentation will be held by international students here at Sinclair and they will be providing unique ways to celebrate in their countries,” said Crystal Ford Bingle, Sinclair’s Student Community and Engagement Coordinator. “I think it is a good opportunity for our students to learn, and I think it was a good thing for our students to learn from people from different countries, so I think it is a good opportunity for us in the U.S.”’

When it comes to the heavier discussions, the Green Dot Program may be one of the toughest, but also the most necessary.

‘‘The Green Dot Program is a program adopted by Sinclair that provides a deeper understanding of scenarios of how to react to high tense situations. This gives a better way to adjust to stress in any environment. It goes over sexual assault, harassment, and gives people an opportunity to be protective as a bystander to not only help people in situations, but also help themselves,’’ said Bingle.

Sinclair Talks has already had four discussions this semester.

  • Thursday, Aug. 26 – Campus Life During a Pandemic
  • Tuesday, Sept. 7 – The Social Change Model of Leadership
  • Tuesday, Sept. 14 – Interactive Coffee Hour Series Part 1
  • Wednesday, Sept. 15 – Interactive Coffee Hour Series Part 2

All the past talks have helped students navigate the start of a new school semester/year, but there was one that had an added bonus.

‘‘This [Interactive Coffee Hour Series] was a unique Sinclair Talk. The Interactive Coffee Hour Series is held in observance of Leadership and Democracy month. Free coffee was provided to all participants,” said Bingle.

There were many guest speakers, all of whom had stories to tell.

“Dr. David Bodary, Dr. Derek Petrey, and Thomas Roberts captivated students with real-life dialogue about what it means to be a citizen, not only in society but also as a student on campus,” said Bingle. “They also helped students to break down the concept of democracy and how it applies to how we interact in a society, addressing power dynamics and how we are part of a community far greater than self.’’
