Earlier, I wrote an article on COSI and how it’s a great place to take kids for a short summer adventure. However, COSI can be a bit limited as younger kids will enjoy it, but older kids may not. This time I am here to discuss another summer adventure that is sure to appeal to all ages – the Cincinnati Zoo.
The Cincinnati Zoo is one of the larger zoos in Ohio and has been expanding during the last year. This summer, the new ‘Kanga Climb’ aerial obstacle course opened, and ground was broken on the ‘Elephant Trek’ exhibit, which is slated to open in 2024 and will be five times larger than the current elephant exhibit. Also of note, the zoo’s two sloths, Moe and Lightning had a baby! This is the first baby sloth at the zoo and currently only Moe is on display for that reason.
Visitors to the zoo are no longer required to wear masks, except for in two areas – the children’s petting zoo and at the giraffe feedings. Some COVID measures are still in place, such as pick up for the cafeteria. Social distancing is still in effect and those who are unvaccinated or who don’t feel comfortable can still choose to wear a mask.
In addition to the animal attractions, patrons of the zoo can also take a train ride which takes guests around the zoo, showcasing most locations and showing off both animals and the plantlife of the zoo. The train is great for all ages and is a good way to take a short break from all of the walking while still being able to see some of the animals. On hot days, the zoo’s indoor enclosures, such as the manatees, the birds and reptiles, and the indoor elephant enclosure can be a great way to cool off for a few moments before resuming your trek through the zoo.
The zoo also has a theatre which plays educational films. There are two gift shops, as well as the café and a smaller, food truck style food court. Other options for food can be found in various locations around the zoo such as Ghirardelli ice cream and Dippin Dots.
The zoo is a great place for an event, such as a birthday party, and you can even plan behind-the-scenes encounters for your special event. However, these encounters do require masks, vaccinated or not. Some of these experiences include sloth feedings, elephant baths, hippo encounters and others. Note that these encounters are a separate booking and are not included in the daily ticket price. There are animal experiences and encounters that are included in your ticket, such as the Cheetah run, the Kangaroo walkabout, and others.
Regardless of age, the zoo is a fantastic adventure for anyone looking for a great day out for the family during the summer.
