Portfolio Status: “Pandemic” As Sinclair Design Students Host Virtual Show

The visual art students of Sinclair Community College are showcasing their work on May 3 at 6 p.m. at the “Virtual Design Portfolio Show.”

In previous years this event has been held in building 12 but faculty are currently working on a website due to COVID-19 restrictions on campus. This year’s design team members include Sarah Myers, James Field IV, and Fletcher Durham.

Guest speakers include alumni students and graduates along with photographers. There will be a Q&A session towards the end of the event. The website is still in the works but will be up soon along with a link to the zoom meeting that will be open to the public to be involved.

This year’s theme is “The Debut” with the tagline “designing a better space.”

“The whole idea is how we as designers are creating new space [it] ties into how COVID sent everyone home and [we] find ourselves in new spaces.”

The show is run by students to show not just the work they have done in college but a portfolio of other art they have done in the past. This is an opportunity for second-year students to compete and showcase their artwork. Students form teams and take ideas to the advisory board, and then pick a theme to represent them for the year.

Fletcher Durham shared how this showcase is an opportunity for students to receive feedback from district professionals who will evaluate their work, similar to previous years. “It’s wonderful we can still have a show.” said Fletcher.
