As Bing Crosby once crooned, “In the lane, snow is glistening. A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland.”

This season, when snow falls and illuminates the world in shimmering and pearly white, reminder to take joy in the simple things: warm your bones with dearly beloved friends by an open fire, indulge in rich, delightful hot chocolate and reminisce of this year’s mid-term social event, Winter Wonderland.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, Sinclair Community college celebrated festivities with students, faculty and staff the annual Winter Wonderland. Hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), a programming committee at Sinclair, Winter Wonderland occurred from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on the first floor of Building 10, otherwise known as the Welcome Center

Winter Wonderland is a cherished tradition at Sinclair and one that remarkably predates the current Dayton campus. Each year, the Campus Activities Board works diligently to ensure that Winter Wonderland takes on new and more exciting forms. In previous years, Winter Wonderland boasted raffles and prizes, cotton candy and—extraordinarily— a wind tunnel where students endeavored to achieve golden tickets so that they may purchase goods from the cafeteria.

This year’s Winter Wonderland was truly special indeed as students were treated to an assortment of food and entertainment, such as The Vault—an exhilarating game that challenges one’s hand and eye coordination. Another activity was the Whip N Skip Carnival game, in which, a puck is sent sliding across a ramp where one gains points.

The challenge lies in how to exert the puck—push softly, the puck shall not make it across the ramp. Conversely, push too hard and the puck will miss the targets completely. Can you make it into all three targets? Students also had the opportunity to have their caricature drawn by members of the Sinclair art club and tested their skills on a mechanical surfboard.  Some even witnessed the awe-inspiring caliber of Chef Adam Lang in an ice sculpting show! A very merry member of the Sinclair community, Adam Lang is a professor in the hospitality department.

Such a celebrated event like Winter Wonderland has always succeeded in bringing the community closer, thus inspiring a sense of “togetherness”. In 2017, Winter Wonderland occurred on Valentine’s Day and featured an array of activities, such as games, exciting trivia, lip sync and even a photo booth sponsored by The Clarion. But, above all, the event highlighted random acts of kindness with valentine’s day cookies and roses.

Through the sheer dedication and passion of organizers, last year’s Winter Wonderland attracted more than one hundred people. For years to come, we hope to see many more wonderful people.  As Chaput elaborates, “It’s a great way to meet other students, faculty and staff.”

Be sure to catch next year’s Winter Wonderland and witness for yourself—or perhaps join in— on the new and exhilarating festivities that Sinclair offers!
