The latest game in the “Super Mario” series released by Nintendo took a fresh take on the Mario universe.
In this game, Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach. Mario, Bowser and Peach are all on one of Bowsers flying ships. Bowser intends to marry Peach and in the opening scenes we see him place a tiara on her head. Mario gets blasted off the ship and is awoken and introduced to a new character named Cappy.
Cappy explains to Mario that the tiara that Princess Peach is wearing is Cappy’s sister. Cappy asks Mario to help rescue both his sister and Princess Peach. Cappy possesses magical abilities and is able to control whatever or whoever is wearing him. This allows Mario to fight bosses, collect hidden items and potentially let hilarity ensue.
“Super Mario Odyssey” is a 3D platformer much like “Super Mario 64” and “Super Mario Sunshine.” However, there are certain sections in the game where it changes from 3D to 2D for a short period of time.
This game is home to 17 different Kingdoms to explore. Some are familiar to Super Mario fans such as the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowsers Kingdom. With this game, the developers attempted to step up the creativity in the Super Mario world and created 15 totally new worlds to explore.
One of the more popular worlds fans are looking forward to is Metro Kingdom. A new quirk in this game is that there are actual other humans besides Mario, Luigi, and Peach. In this Kingdom, you are able to interact with the other humans but are not able to control them with Cappy.
There are a few new mechanics in this game. For example, you are able to turn Mario into a ball and continuously roll around areas. There is no time limit to this ability. Mario also has a long jump, which has returned to this game. As Mario, you are able to collect speed while rolling, do a long jump and return to rolling in one motion, without stopping. This ability allows players to get to new and different areas quickly.
A new feature added to the series in this game is the different outfits that Mario can wear. There are currently 42 different outfits that you can unlock and wear in game. Along with the new outfits, you can also choose different hats to wear. You can pick and choose different hats and outfits to wear separately or together.
In previous “Super Mario” games, the end of the level resulted in collecting a gold star. In “Odyssey,” you collect moons, and not just one at the end of the level. There are hundreds of moons to collect, which are required in order to unlock new Kingdoms.
The “Super Mario” series is known for the various engaging visuals that make it fun for the player to look at. “Super Mario Odyssey” looks to continue this practice by harnessing the full processing power of the Nintendo Switch.
“Super Mario Odyssey” is a new experience for fans and novices to the series with 15 new worlds to explore and a plethora of new game mechanics and characters.
