Dear Brittany,

I am responding to your column “How to be a Cat.” When I come to class, I look forward to picking up The Clarion and reading your column; it usually makes me laugh and brightens up my day. This one, unfortunately, did not have that effect.

Even if you are whiny, a pain and hateful (and you may not be, I don’t know you), you should realize that attaching these characteristics to all cats is an example of extreme generalization, and shows a major lack of thought.

I have had cats in my house all my life and love them, but that is not my main point. I wanted to remind you that animals I have known and seen do show love and compassion for their owners. I know elderly people who have a cat, and their cat, in return, gives them warmth and comfort; and this is so very valuable to them.

Perhaps before you describe a cat as a “giant butthead that looks cute and fluffy,” you might think twice. In my opinion, you need to realize that this is a college newspaper, and that word choice is inappropriate and shows immaturity.

Sincerely,

Debby Thomas
