With political views always tying into student affairs, one Sinclair Community College alumni is using her knowledge to help activist groups not only in Dayton, but also throughout Ohio.
Darsheel Kaur is involved with the local branch of Freedom
Side, a group for young adults that rallies against racial injustice. She also works with the Ohio Student Association, an organization for Ohio students to organize, advocate public policy and developing leadership skills.
“Occupy OSU (Ohio State University) was the first organization I became interested in. I looked up information on the group before becoming involved,” Darsheel said, when asked how she became involved in activist groups.
While in the group, Kaur discussed an instance where Occupy OSU experienced conflict with members that supported the right to carry concealed weapons, while her group held a peaceful candlelight vigil for slain teenager, Trayvon Martin.
Kaur believes her upbringing influenced her participation in these organizations.
“I was raised in Sikhism, which is about equality and standing for truth and justice,” Kaur said. “I feel people should stand side by side with each other, no matter their race, creed or upbringing.”
She is involved with many organizations because it makes her feel connected to something larger than herself.
“It’s a place where I can bring all of my opinions.”
Kaur believes joining an activist organization can make you feel like there is a purpose for life.
“Everyone has something to contribute to what they believe in,” Kaur said. “Never feel like you are not important and don’t be afraid to speak your truth.”
