Sinclair’s Tartan Terrace offers fine dining experience

The Tartan Terrace Restaurant offers a dining experience that is prepared, cooked and presented by the culinary students of Sinclair Community College.

The Tartan Terrace is staffed by Sinclair students, but is guided by the instructors of the different classes.

Derek Allen, interim chair of Hospitality Management and Tourism and Culinary Arts for Sinclair, said that the servers are prepared to tell each customer what is in each item on the menu in case of a food allergy.

“Everything is made from scratch,” said Allen. “We ask if there are any allergies that we need to know about. Every server will know exactly what each item is made out of.”

Amber Tipton, 46, has been attending Sinclair since the 2010 Winter Quarter for Hospitality Management and Food Services. She has been actively involved in the new elite lunches this semester.

“I love cooking for people and I love serving the public,” Tipton said.

She noted the experience working in the Tartan Terrace gives students a dosage of what they would have to deal with in an actual functioning fine dining restaurant. She has learned about how to factor in timing in the kitchen and how to think on her feet while staying flexible.

“It is really important that we have guests come and eat at the Tartan Terrace,” Tipton said. “Help us to be as prepared as we can be when we leave here to go into the industry.”

The Tartan Terrace Restaurant, located in Building 13 on the fourth floor, is open for lunch Tuesdays and Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m., for dinner on Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. And new to the Terrace is the elite lunch, which is on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m.

All lunch meals are $9 and dinner meals are $15. The meals consist of soup, salad, entrée, dessert and your choice of Pepsi products or gourmet coffee. The size of the meal will vary based on reservations being lunch or dinner.

The new elite lunches are $15, but consist of a seven-course meal. Allen said students work in teams to produce the same end product, but are allowed to be creative with the product and add their own signature to it.

The fine dining experience is open to all community members. Reservations are required for all dining experiences and only cash and checks will be accepted. To make a reservation, call 512-3587.
