Blogging the days away

Everyone has a story to tell, a voice to be heard and a different perspective about Sinclair Community College.

Imagine if 365 days out of the year, everyone came together to record their daily experiences at Sinclair through blogging.

“The blog is sort of a way to chronicle what Sinclair is really about, not just students, faculty and staff, but administrators as well. It is also about students having a voice because there is power in storytelling,” said Kate Geiselman, associate professor of English.

The key to 3six5 Sinclair is that for every day out of the year, a different person will have the opportunity to write a journal entry about their experiences or a day in the life at Sinclair.  From doing so, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, the blog will capture what Sinclair is really like through the eyes of those who blog, Geiselman said.

“Blogging breaks a barrier. It is really scary to put something out there, but it feels really good when you do,” Geiselman said. “[The blog is] is a way to tell about Sinclair, but really about giving a voice to the writers and allowing them to tell their story.”

Geiselman said that she hopes the blog will also provide a way of demystifying writing. She said that too many students, faculty or staff are afraid of writing and feel that because they are not writers, they can’t write.

“Anybody can write. If you can think and if you can write a sentence, then you can write,” Geiselman said. “The blog should be fun and it fits right into social networking. We are really planning to hear authentic voices.”

The idea of the 3six5 Sinclair blog originates from a 3six5 global blog in Chicago that was founded by Len Kendall and Daniel Honigman. She said they were enthusiastic when she presented her idea to them for a 3six5 Sinclair blog.

To get involved with the blog, email Geiselman at the3six5sinclair@gmail.com, pick an available date to blog and commit to completing the blog on that day. For more information, like the 3six5 Sinclair page on Facebook.

The Sinclair Writing Club will also be a part of the blogging process. To join and find out times and dates for meetings, join the Facebook page.

After the blog is complete for the year, the idea is to reflect on the past and possibly publish a book every quarter, according to Geiselman.

“In my wildest dream, I want 365 different writers. I hope that people will be interested in it and that it will be something we do every year,” Geiselman said. “ [As for the blogging], you never know until you try it.”
