Intramural Sports back at the Learning Centers

The Intramural Sports program at Sinclair Community College’s Learning Centers is a bit more informal than some students might be used to, according to Travis Binkley, IT Lab Specialist at the Englewood LC.

“We do things a little differently here from the main campus,” says Binkley.  “We kinda just come, pick teams, and play.”

Binkley runs the intramural program along with Tyrone Curtis and Richard Kloth, Student Services advisors at the Englewood and Huber Heights centers, respectively.

The structure of the program is very informal, according to Binkley.  The games are open to all Sinclair students, and anyone who shows up gets to play.  Teams are usually chosen by campus, with adjustments being made if not enough players show up from one location or the other.

“A lot more people show up for the football and basketball games,” says Binkley.  “We’re trying to get more people interested in softball and volleyball.”

The program also includes a feature called Coach’s Corner, where Kloth and Curtis offer academic guidance and lead informal discussions about success and leadership.

The Learning Centers offer sports during all four quarters of the academic year, with basketball being offered during Winter Quarter, volleyball during Spring, and flag football in the Fall.  Softball is offered during Summer Quarter, with games being played on alternating Fridays at the Englewood, Huber Heights, and Preble County YMCA’s.

Students interested in participating in the intramural sports program should contact Tyrone Curtis at 512-5804.
