Sinclair student’s website to shine light on bills

Sinclair Community College student Andrew Staroska is the Chief Operating Officer of www.truthaboutbills.com, a non-partisan website aiming to give information about legislation going through Congress.

“The goal of the website is to better inform people about happenings in politics. My age group, the 18-26 crowd, is usually ignorant of politics and choose not to be well informed for one reason or another,” Staroska said via email.

The goal of the website is simple.

“We take bills and news and explain it in plain English in hopes that people use it to become more well versed in politics in general.”

Staroska said he believes his age group is not interested in politics.

“I see it as apathy. We simply just don’t care. Many people don’t care about what happens because they think it won’t affect them. They simply ignore it and continue on their way,” Staroska said.  “They are more worried about what happened on the Jersey Shore or who lost this round on Idol. What they don’t get is whether they pay attention or not, every action taken by the government at any level affects their life and future.”

The way his generation pays attention to politics drove him to create the website, he said.

“The website was started after a conversation between myself and my friend Mike Simpkins. We were discussing the general direction in the country and how we weren’t happy with it,” Staroska said.  “We also discussed how we were almost disgusted with the lack of involvement our age group had in politics.”

Staroska claims to have no bias on the website, but links to Republican Party-affiliated websites can be found on the site.  Staroska said he himself is a conservative, but that the links “are not an endorsement.”

“The website has no leaning in our writing,” Staroska said.  “The links are to large cap websites who have the largest following among politics in the U.S., as well as places who have linked our stories and friends of the website.”
