Letter to the Editor

ByGeorgia Howard

Nov 15, 2010

Dear Editor,

In regard to the editorial, “It’s diverse if you’re liberal,” in the November 2 Clarion, I couldn’t disagree more.  The idea that colleges and universities are not expressing a conservative perspective is specious.  Most universities and colleges are covering a wide swath of viewpoints, from conservative to liberal to socialist to fascist, in the context of classes on history, political science, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and numerous other disciplines. What most people want, who complain about the liberalness of colleges and universities, is exclusive expression of conservative positions with no discussion of alternatives.  Liberalism by its nature implies inclusiveness, not exclusiveness. The notion that colleges are not hiring conservatives is also a ruse. Look at the rise in popularity of private and religious colleges that espouse solely a conservative perspective. Give me a break, Richard Redding; what you really want is to silence the liberal voice, which represents the people, not the elites.  Sorry, but we cannot and will not be silenced.
