The 2010-2011 Sinclair Community College women’s basketball team is looking to build on last year’s success and ready to have an exciting season.

This year’s team has five returning sophomores to go along with two sophomore transfers and incoming freshman.

Head Coach Jeff Dillon, who is in his eight season coaching at Sinclair, says he believes this year’s team has the potential to do great things.

“We have a very deep team, all of our players our talented,” Dillon said. “I believe we can play ten deep in our rotation and be successful.”

Coach Dillon believes that Sinclair can cause matchup problems on offense for other teams they are facing because of their versatility.

“We want to play up tempo and get down the floor,” Dillon said. “We may not have a lot of size but we’re a very quick team and we will use that to our advantage.”

Dillon sees his team sometimes playing four perimeter players and one in the post to take advantage of their good shooting and spread out the other team’s defense.

“I like to run the dribble drive offense as well, our players can drive to the hole and if the shot is not there then kick it out to one of our good shooters,” Dillon said. “But we will also stay involved in the post; we just want high percentage shots.”

On defense, Dillon wants his team to press on made baskets and keep the pressure on the other team.

“We’re going to try and force other teams into mistakes,” Dillon said. “If we stay disciplined in our pressure we should force turnovers which can lead to easy points.”

Dillon said there is a great team chemistry, and believes they will respond well against adversity over the season.

This year’s team is following up on a season in which Sinclair beat Owens Community College, the second ranked team in the nation at the time.

“We made it too the second round of the region tournament before losing to Grand Rapids CC who made it to the tournament final,” Dillon said. “With the experience our returning players have, they can help lead and guide our team.”

One thing Dillon said was important is that Sinclair comes out and supports the sports teams.

“When people come out to support, it gives us a huge boost,” Dillon said. “It’s nice to have a home court advantage. We will play an exciting style of basketball, people should come out and watch us.”
