Get involved with Tartan sports

ByAdam Adkins

Sep 14, 2010

So, this is your second week here at Sinclair. You read last week’s edition, right? Good.

By now you know about Sinclair police, parking and countless other portions of Sinclair. But we’ve got sports too.  Did you know that Sinclair plays in Region XII of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)? Some of those start soon too, as our own Taurin Hickman has reported on in this issue.

But other sports occur throughout the year. Right now the baseball team under head coach Steve Dintaman is practicing and preparing for the start of the season, which is Feb. 7. They are scrimmaging over schools, including heading to Northern Kentucky University and hosting Fort Wayne. This period also offers a chance for scouts to examine the players.

You can catch the team play at Grady’s Field at Athletes in Action in Xenia for all home games once the season begins.

Building 8, second floor is where you’ll find all of the varsity basketball games.  Coach Jeff Price (men’s) and coach Jeff Dillon (women’s) both lead competitive squads that entertain the crowds. Expect more on both teams as the school year rolls along. You can also catch the volleyball team in the gym, led by coach K.C. Gan, who has five returning players and seven incoming freshmen.

Coach Dave Pence and his women’s tennis team are talented and will play a number of matches this year.

Sinclair has a history of success in sports. In the basement of Building 8, right across the way from the Tartan Cantina are trophy cases that indicate this. Going to a Sinclair game doesn’t have to just be about watching a friend or supporting your school—you could be witnessing a truly great team!

Just as an example, last year’s baseball team won 36 games regular season games and coach Dintaman won his second consecutive Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Coach of the Year award.

See what I mean? Sinclair might not be a huge school, but on the field, the court or the diamond, we can still kick some butt. Make sure to get out and see your Tartans in action this year.

For those among you that would like to bulk up or work on your cardio—isn’t that all of us?—Sinclair also holds open recreation in the form of a weight room and a pool.

The weight room is open from 7-9 p.m. Monday-through-Thursday, closed Friday and open from 8-10 a.m. Saturday. The pool is open 1-3 p.m. Monday-and-Wednesday and 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. A student quarterly fee for using the facilities is $3, and students can only pay with a tartan card. But, if you are taking an activities class you can participate for free.
