With a consistent growing enrollment at Sinclair the Police force wants to make sure the campus stays safe and aware. According to Chief of Police for Sinclair Charles Gift the main issues they face are thefts of unattended property.
“We want people to remember to not sit down and leave valuables” Gift said, “You should always keep an eye on them.”
If you lose an item you should check the lost and found which is at the Sinclair Police office in room 7112 right outside the bookstore. You can also contact them at 512-2700.
A service that is provided by Sinclair Police is officer escorts. “You can come to our office and request an escort or you can call us and we will send an officer to help service you,” Gift said.
If you are not able to contact them by phone you can use one of the Emergency Direct Line stations that are around the campus.
“We have exactly 37 stations or ‘blue lights’ posted around campus,” Gift said. “These stations are a direct line to dispatch so you will be talking directly with someone who can help you.”
Another issue at Sinclair is smoking. “With a lot of new people coming they normally don’t know the designated smoking areas,” Gift said. “We try to make sure they stay in those designated areas and if not we will direct them to the locations.”
Baring any emergencies at Sinclair there are fire alarms and a public announcement system to let people know about what’s going on. “We have 1500 loud speakers to make announcements campus wide” Gift said.
Sinclair Police can also give citations to students for things like jaywalking and traffic violations.
“We can give citations for anything permissible to state law or city ordinance,” Gift said. “We want to change the behavior of some people so no one will get hurt.”
On September 29th, Sinclair police will be holding a safety expo at Sinclair. Outside local, state, and federal law enforcement come and help students to become aware of safety in school and other areas. The expo will be located outside Building 7.
In the end Chief Gift and the Sinclair police want to help ensure safety at the campus as much as possible.
“Sinclair officers enforce college policy and criminal statutes with integrity and honesty” Gift said. “We do our best to provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, and staff.”
