Athletic director explains W.O.W. cancelation

Sinclair Athletic Director Jack Giambrone said he’d never been a bigger fan of the Weather Channel than he was last week.

Giambrone said he watched the weather all morning to see if the athletic department was going to hold it’s biggest event of the year, White Out Wednesday. The event was to feature two basketball games, a pizza party and prizes, but was canceled for the second consecutive year on Wednesday, Feb. 10, when the coach of Edison Community College said his team couldn’t make it due to a level three snow emergency in Darke County.

Giambrone said he was disappointed with the cancelation. He said the event would not be made up because it takes too much planning and work to get everything just right.

“The date is chosen one year in advance to ensure there’s nobody else in the area that is playing and to make sure the travel service can get to the pep band,” Giambrone said. “The dates we are looking at (to make it up), we can’t get the pep band or the sponsors here, or we can’t get transportation arranged, so it becomes very difficult to do it again.”

Giambrone said all WOW shirts that were to be given away at the event would be saved for next year. He said next year’s event will still take place in the winter and will be “bigger and better than ever.”
