One five-yard penalty for too many men in the huddle cost Brett Favre a trip to the Super Bowl and I’m heartbroken about it.
In years past Favre getting eliminated from playoffs wouldn’t have bothered me much because I’ve never been a fan his, but for some reason I found myself rooting for the 40-year-old gunslinger this season. I wore a smile on my face when Favre stuck it to the Packers twice this year to the tune of seven touchdown passes and zero interceptions and I was in awe he was able to lead the Vikings as far has he did, being that he was only with the team for such a short time.
I guess my biggest disappointment is that there won’t be a Favre versus Peyton Manning Super Bowl. That would have been amazing: two of the games all-time great quarterbacks battling it out for the ultimate prize. It would have been a great clash of styles: the plotting, robotic Manning versus the risk taking, daredevil Favre.
And think about all the hilarious commercials we could have got! But instead all I get is boring little Drew Brees who will probably turn this game into a love fest by talking about how great Manning is and how much respect he has for him.
Yuck!
I needed Favre in the Super Bowl to spice things up, but now I might never see him play again because in his postgame press conference he said a return to the Vikings is “highly unlikely.”
I’m torn as to whether I want to see Favre retire or not. On one hand I would like to see him go out on top. He could definitely do that now with the great year he had and I would also like for him to retire somewhat healthy, but then there is this other side of me that wants him to come back because of how exciting he makes the NFL.
If this is the last we’ve seen of Favre, all I’ve got to say is thanks for the memories.
Wait!
What am I saying?
This is Favre we’re talking about; he’ll probably come out of retirement a week before the season starts.
See you next year, Brett.
