In the midst of the devastating earthquakes that struck Haiti in recent weeks, Sinclair Community College is doing its part to raise relief funds.
Sinclair has put together a Haiti Disaster Response Team, which includes seven members within the college that met on Monday, Jan. 25, to discuss a possible strategy.
Sinclair is teaming up with Dayton’s chapter of the American Red Cross to make sure all donations will be sent directly to the relief effort. Stewardship and Annual Gifts Officer Sharon Smith is accepting donations in Building 12 Room 201, according to an e-mail sent to students, faculty and staff last week.
In the e-mail, Sinclair President Steven Johnson stated he hopes to “organize aid trips for students, faculty and employees interested in providing hands-on help in Haiti. In addition, the college plans to provide books, furniture and equipment to aid K12 and high education institutions in their rebuilding efforts.”
Natasha Baker, Sinclair’s director of college relations, said the team is in its early stages of planning, but students will be given a chance to donate at various locations around campus.
“We’ll be putting plastic containers around every Aramark location on campus,” Baker said. “(Everywhere) students have a place to pay for food, they will have a chance to donate money.”
Baker said more information will be available once the Response Team lays out a general plan.
“Right now, the people of Haiti have a great need,” Johnson said in the e-mail. “We have a great opportunity to help meet that need in any way we can.”
