Christmas cinema: No. 5

A brief argument over the hilarity of “Christmas Vacation” got me to thinking: what are the best Christmas movies of my generation?

I decided to put a top ten list together and post one movie per day until Thursday, Dec. 24. The only guideline for the list is the film must be released no earlier than 1980.

5. Scrooged (1988)

Based on the Charles Dickens novel “A Christmas Carol,” Bill Murray plays Frank Cross in the ’80s Ebenezer Scrooge tale.Cross is a TV executive who doesn’t appreciate the spirit and joy of Christmas.

A visit from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future change his take on the holiday.Murray is a comedic icon and his screen presence is enjoyable in this seasonal flick. His wit and sarcastic remarks help drive the movie to classic status.
