Listening to great literature

Sub: If you can’t read it, listen to it.

I spend about two-and-a-half hours in my car everyday as I drive from home to work to school to home again, which cuts extensively into my reading time. While I enjoy listening to music or the news, I often long to use that time more effectively.

Now, I can thank LibriVox.org.

LibriVox boasts a catalog of more than 2300 titles in the public domain read by volunteers and is available to anyone who cares to download them for free. Available titles include everything from Aesop’s Fables to Émile Zola’s L’Assommoir.

In between, you’ll find plenty of titles you’ll probably have to read for everything from English to philosophy classes along with a few you just want to read because you are curious. The advantage with LibriVox is that you can listen while you’re busy doing something else, like driving.

And, if the titles at LibriVox aren’t enough, the site has also partnered with Project Gutenberg and iBiblio to provide an even wider selection. Virtually all of the titles are available in MP3 and .ogg formats, with some titles from Project Gutenberg and iBiblio also available in other formats.
