A community forum set to celebrate the birthday of Malcolm X was also used to converse about a variety of global topics on Friday, May 22, in the basement of Building 8.
“We used this forum to talk about the global economic crisis and to also celebrate the birthday of Malcolm X,” said Dr. Boikai Twe, who serves as the Psychology and African-American studies chair.
Umi Oji-NjiDeka, Logan Martinez and Daryl Muhammad spoke to the community forum audience and looked at different ways to change the global crisis, according to Twe.
“Our goal for the forum is just to spread the word about alternatives,” Twe said. “This was student organized, so they keep up with the idea on how we could address the issue that students are concerned about the global economic crisis.”
Twe and Bakari Lumumba helped organize the event that also provided drinks to the audience. To celebrate Malcolm X’s May 19th birthday, Twe said his human rights background connected well with the problems the world faces today.
“Malcolm worked for human rights and justice, especially for poor people and especially for African-Americans,” Twe said. “With the global economic crisis, people are deeply affected today.”
