Art sale raises money for students and scholarships

Sinclair Community College hosted its semi-annual art sale last week in Building 13. Nick Voegele, an art student, said the sale was an opportunity for people to see what’s happening in the art department.

“We are producing stuff worth having here at the school,” Voegele said.

The four-day sale featured paintings, drawings and ceramics created by students and teachers. Jessica Allen, a journalism student at Sinclair, said she enjoyed browsing the display tables.

“I love it. This art is very different. Every piece has its own personality,” Allen said.

Art was available to everyone at an affordable price, according to Voegele. Some smaller pieces were sold for $1, $3 or $4. Some larger pieces were sold for $15, $20 or $35. The art department received 10 percent of all sales, according to Associate Professor Bob Coates, who helped organize the event.

Some pieces were on sale as they were left behind by former students, according to Coates.  He said other items were raffled on the final day of the sale.  Money from these pieces went toward art scholarships, he said.

Coates described the sale as a co-op.  Art students both helped set prices and run the sale table, he said.

“It gives them some experience on how to sell art and how to price art,” Coates said.

Adam Eckley, an art student, said the sale was a way to supplement income.  The art sale also gave students an opportunity to “test the waters” and see what art people are buying, according to Voegele.

Art sales are held twice a year, according to Coates.  The next art sale will be in November, he said.
