The Travel and Tourism department at Sinclair Community College is hoping to raise awareness for National Travel and Tourism Week, according to Rene Anderson, an adjunct faculty member in Sinclair’s Travel and Tourism department.
“I think that the public itself is not really aware of the magnitude that tourism does for the economy of the cities, our country, the (United States),” said Anderson.
The eight-day annual salute to travel, themed “Travel Matters,” began Saturday, May 9. This is the first year the Travel and Tourism department has shared the week with the whole campus, according to Anderson. She said that previous years have been celebrated within the department.
The department wants to raise awareness of the travel industry’s importance among Sinclair students, according to Anderson. She said that student volunteers are creating signs advertising various travel facts. Signs will be placed in student areas such as the library and the Tartan Marketplace.
Anderson believes the travel industry has an important effect on the economy. The industry makes $110 billion in tax revenue for local, state and federal governments according to the U.S. Travel Association’s Web site. It also states that one out of every eight non-agricultural jobs is created directly or indirectly by the travel industry.
