Library considering new sign-in system for computers

Sinclair Community College’s library is considering adopting a new sign-in system.  Douglas Kaylor, the director of the library, says that the demands on the library have challenged the capability of the current system.  He hopes that a new system will give students a more seamless experience in the library.

“We truly want students to use this space and feel comfortable, productive and successful,” Kaylor said.

Kaylor would like a new system to display wait times for computer usage. The busiest time for library usage is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to Kaylor.  Some wait lists can have as many as 20 names on them, he said.  He believes a display time would let students know where they stood in the waiting list.

He would also like for software to be shared on a single server.  For example, if the nursing software was shared on a single server, then any computer in the library could be used as a nursing computer.

The current system is set up by location in the library including the lower and upper levels, Room 7L03 and laptops located at the main desk.  Right now, students sign up for a computer in the location they would like to use, said Kaylor.  He would like for a new system to let students choose their computer location from a single sign-in location.

The library is not Sinclair’s only computer lab, Kaylor said.  He believes that students may not know about all of Sinclair’s open computer labs, including the CIL in Building 14 and the Teleport in Building 13.

The library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.  For information about all of Sinclair’s computer labs visit the Web site at http://www.sinclair.edu/technology/labs/mpl.
