March is Women’s History Month. This is a time to reflect on the achievements of women all over the world, both in the past and in the present. However, it is not just a time to reflect, but a time to act, just as those who, throughout history, fought tirelessly against oppression and for equal rights (among the few things women have had to fight for/against). Here are five ways you can celebrate Women’s History Month.

  1. Read books about women, by women

Fiction:

  • “Anita de Monte Laughs Last” by Xochitl Gonzalez
  • “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood
  • “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker
  • “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women” by Lisa See
  • “Sisters in Arms” by Kaia Alderson

Nonfiction:

  • “Crying in H Mart” by Michelle Zauner
  • “Madame Fourcade’s Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France’s Largest Spy Network Against Hitler” by Lynne Olson
  • “Becoming” by Michelle Obama
  • “The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women” by Kate Moore
  • “In the Dream House” by Carmen Maria Machado

  1. Visit an art exhibit

On March 27, at The Dayton Woman’s Club, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be a presentation and exhibition by local female artists.

On the same day, from 5:30-7 p.m., The Dayton Woman’s Club is hosting a panel discussion of “Women in Diverse Cultures,” with speakers of all different backgrounds.

  1. Support women owned businesses
  1. Watch empowering movies with female leads
  • “Queen of Katwe” (2016)
  • “He Named Me Malala” (2015)
  • “Lady Bird” (2017)
  • “Hidden Figures” (2016)
  • “Respect” (2021)

  1. Listen to podcasts

These are just a few of the many ways to acknowledge the many accomplishments of the women of our time and to remember the difficult journey that it was, and continues to be, for all women.
