On the evening of January 1, 1863, African Americans across the country anxiously awaited the news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. President Abraham Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 during the American Civil War, but this only freed slaves in confederate states. Slavery in America was formally abolished with the adoption of the 13th Amendment. On January 31, 1865, the House of Representatives passed the proposed amendment with a vote of 119-56, just over two-thirds majority.

After the abolition of slavery, black individuals were no longer subjected to enslavement. However, policies were implemented to ensure that they would work in support of plantation owners. These policies have had long-lasting consequences, including their impact on present-day wealth inequality.

June 19, 1865, marks one of the most important days in American history. When Union soldiers arrived in Galveston Texas, the last enslaved U.S. populations were informed of their freedom. Juneteenth serves to commemorate this day. In 1979, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday. In the year 2021, President Joe Biden established Juneteenth as a federal holiday, and today marks the second year of its official celebration.

On Juneteenth, there will be several events dedicated to the holiday to celebrate the end of slavery. In Kettering, Ohio, The Fraze Pavillian will be holding a free event, “Juneteenth – Celebrating Freedom” from 4-7pm. According to the website, this event will feature “live music, food trucks, local vendors, and crafts.” In addition, Greater Dayton RTA will be free on Sunday, June 18 and Monday, June 19 to make sure the community has access to Juneteenth celebrations.

Juneteenth should serve as a reminder of the progress we have made and inspire us to strive for a more inclusive and just future for all. Together, let’s celebrate this significant milestone and embrace the ongoing journey towards equality.
