Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Lockdown Lifted

At around 9:25 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, there was a report of an active shooter on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, Ohio. The report came from the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) building. NASIC is the Air Force’s intelligence center and is heavily secured. According to their website, they are the main source of foreign air and space threat analysis for the Department of Defense.

In response to the report, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) went on lockdown and the surrounding streets were blocked off from traffic. On their Facebook page, Wright State University students and staff were advised to stay clear of the north end of campus and to take any necessary safety precautions.

Security did a sweep of the 850,000 square foot, three-story NASIC building two times before giving the all clear. The lockdown was lifted at 1:42 a.m.

On Friday morning, Col. Patrick Miller, Installation Commander at WPAFB, gave a press conference and said that a gunshot was heard in the building, but there were no fatalities or injuries and no threat was found. The lockdown and all of the security protocols were an automatic response to the report of an active shooter. The Base and surrounding areas have been given the all-clear.
