Fancy a movie or a trip to the cinema? The Clarion has you covered. Below is a list of five movies to look forward to this year.

  1. Bob Marley: One Love (Feb. 14, 2024)

Biopics tend to either be really good or really bad. It’ll be interesting to see this film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, turns out. Few lives have proven to be as iconic or dramatic as Reggae’s superstar. Given the late singer’s legendary back catalog, the film should at least offer plenty of good music to get viewers on their feet.

2. Dune Pt. 2 (March 1, 2024)

For lovers of sci-fi, “Dune” was seen as unadaptable after so many years and false starts. Denis Villueneve’s 2021 blockbuster would change that. The longtime fan of Frank Herbert’s masterpiece brought the style, visuals, and intrigue the series’ is known for in a manner that stayed true to its roots.

While the first movie covered the first part of Dune, the second should wrap up the story told in the first book. In addition to Timothée Chalamet, Javier Bardem, and Zendaya, the cast will include Hollywood legend Christopher Walken and “Elvis” star Austin Butler. The two will play Emperor Shaddam IV Corrino and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen respectively as events on Arrakis head to a cataclysmic conclusion.

3. Furiosa (May 24, 2024)

George Miller’s “Mad Max” series is a pillar of post-apocalyptic fiction, delivering thrills and chills since the 70s. Furiosa is a spin-off prequel telling the story of the popular Mad Max Fury Road heroine Imperator Furiosa. The franchise has come a long way from its $350,000 budget, but baby-faced Mel Gibson has never strayed from its gritty and bombastic style that has made the Australian director a legend. Anya Taylor Joy is taking Charlize Theron’s place as the titular character. We predict lots of sand, explosions, and dead bodies.

4. Hit Man (June 7, 2024)

Five-time Oscar nominee Richard Linklater is back and his latest motion picture is already earning praise. Netflix won the race to stream the film, which stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. If the trailer is anything to go by expect plenty of action, romance, and laughs.

5. Deadpool 3 (July 26, 2024)

Ryan Reynolds’ take on the merc-with-a-mouth has endeared him to audiences around the world. For the series’ third installment, he’ll be joined by Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) as the pair take on a common enemy. “Real Steel” director Shawn Levy has been brought on to helm his first Deadpool movie. There should be plenty of laughs and katana-wielding fun to keep audiences happy.
