My Voice: “Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course” is a Triumph of Gameplay and Value

Cuphead-Protagonists

The first ever extra downloadable content (DLC) for the critically acclaimed Studio MDHR game “Cuphead” has been released. Entitled “Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course” and an incredibly reasonable $8, the DLC opens an entire new world with new bosses, weapons, and the opportunity to play as Chalice, a female ghost friend of Cuphead and Mugman from the original game.

One of the bosses featured in the game

In a space where giant studios, like Electronic Arts, nickel and dime players with DLC – a “Sims 4” Game Pack alone is $10 – Studio MDHR clearly did it right. Their DLC hits the sweet spot of being a lot of extra content and being sold at a reasonable price. MDHR is meticulous in their game making, and it shines through everything they do. They treat their employees correctly and avoid overworking them with unreasonable deadlines, in the industry this is called ‘crunch’. Infact MDHR pushed back the release date explicitly to avoid rushing their employees. With traditional hand drawn animation, stealler music, remarkable writing; their games are quality

“Delicious Last Course” is no exception. Incorporating Chalice into the main game flawlessly as well, the studio went above and beyond the high hopes of the fans. Players begin in the new, more metropolitan style, side of Inkwell Isle (a location that looks to have inspired the city scenes within the Netflix Cuphead cartoon.) Chalice explains how she can switch places with the Cuphead brothers through a cookie (in-game charm mechanic) and is immediately available to play. We’re introduced to her movement tutorial as she has a different set of abilities than the brothers. We’re introduced to Saltbaker, a pastry chef who claims to have a recipe that will bring Chalice back to life permanently. Setting up the player’s goal of defeating the news bosses to gather legendary ingredients for Saltbaker.

The DLC plays about two to three hours for a good player. Four to five if you struggle with playing Cuphead (like I do). It is incredibly fun and worth spending an afternoon on! Especially if you have a friend to play in two player mode with. The animation is beautiful and the music is fantastic. The detail and care put into every inch of the game is incredibly clear. I highly recommend you buy it and try. Even if you aren’t the gaming type, find a friend who is and play with them or watch them play! Or consider checking out the Netflix show!
