The international series started off strong this year. On Wednesday, Jan. 24 in the basement of the library, Dr. Yufeng Wang, a professor of history, along with some of her students, brought us a presentation on China and Chinese culture. The Clarion had the pleasure of talking with Dr. Wang about the presentation.
Dr. Wang wanted to make sure that, along with the history of Chinese culture, the arts were highlighted in the presentation.
“Language is the basis of art, and that the motion of most paintings is based in words,” she said.
A lot of art is words, which is why she and her students made it a point to explore some of the calligraphy of Chinese culture.
In the demonstrations, students created images of a panda as well as different styles of writing for the Chinese year of 2024. The year of the dragon will be upon us on Feb. 10 as the lunar calendar marks the start of a new year.
Furthermore Dr. Wang also wanted to bring up performance art, which often showcases health and beauty within art.
“Art is done in performance, and the fitness dance is the easiest for anyone to do,” she said.
The final thing that Dr. Wang pointed out was the opportunity for students to learn more about culture on an academic side. Sinclair offers plenty of enriching classes on Chinese culture, and even has an East Asian Certificate Program.
Please contact Dr. Yufeng Wang at yufeng.wang@sinclair.edu if you are interested in any of these programs; there is availability. Also, keep an eye out for an event held in April to promote these items and provide more details.
Lastly, the International Education Office regularly hosts different cultural experiences throughout the semester. Be sure to watch out for more International Series events on Sinclair’s events page.
