The Sinclair Theater has, for years, brought entertainment to students and the community. Instead of the traditional Charlie Brown Christmas Story they normally perform, a new play took to the stage. From Dec. 14-17 they performed “Twas the Night Before Christmas and We’re HOME ALONE!” by Sinclair’s very own Pattie Celek.

This adorable play brings the audience into the home of a family who has gone away for Christmas and…who is left at home? Well the pets of course! The play follows Kia the cat and Duffy the dog.

These characters introduce viewers to the concept of Christmas, as it is their belief. In a tizzy, thinking their owners are home, they rush outside and can’t get back in. This introduces the neighboring pets who have different beliefs.

These new characters introduce Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Las Posadas. Each, in a unique way, explains how the holidays work.

The pet whose family celebrates Hanukkah tells the story of why the eight days exist. The pet whose family celebrates Kwanzaa describes the seven core values, teaching the audience how to pronounce them too. Finally, they introduce Las Posadas as a traditionally Hispanic holiday, which lasts nine days to symbolize the pregnancy and journey of Mary.

Each holiday was introduced at an elementary level so that everyone could understand, even young children. It was a very family friendly production, and the Clarion suggests you come back next year to watch it.

Additionally, Sinclair’s Theatre Department is one of the only theaters that has shadow actors. So, if you or someone you know is deaf or extremely hard of hearing, there are ALS performers right next to the stage performers. They also took time to teach everyone how to sign the main chorus of jingle bells.

Overall, the whole play is fun and interactive. It would make a good family tradition to take little ones to see it.
