The Kuumba Celebration was held Feb. 26, in Building 8 in the Student Leadership Development Center. The African American History Month Committee and Professor Boikai Twe’s African American Studies 111 class coordinated the event.
The celebration had performances by Sinclair’s Life Choir, Jazz band Global Theory, a presentation on nutrition by Nefertiti Oji-njideka, Research Assistant in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago, as well as a Talent competition, and African-American Trivia.
Kuumba is one of the principles of Kwanzaa. Kuumba, meaning “creativity,” represents “[doing] always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it,” according to history.com.
