Spring break is almost here. With that, the Alternative Break Club at Sinclair Community College will be spending their spring break in Maryville, Tenn. from March 2 through March 7.

The club is not traveling without a purpose, as they will be helping a Cherokee community. This is the first year that an alternative break has been held. The group will be spending their time assisting the Cherokee community with senior care and childcare.

“[Which] can be anything from helping students read, to hanging up blinds for the seniors or painting fences or helping in the garden,” Merri Shearer, Alternative Break Program advisor said.

They will also be helping at the Smokey Mountain National State Park by picking up litter and planting trees.

“The whole purpose of an alternative break experience…is we want students to reflect on their role in the community through service, activism, learning about it, then leading,” Shearer said.

Although it is too late to sign up to go, the club has held meetings since October in preparation for their trip to Marysville.

For those who are not a part of the Alternative Break Club and will be spending their spring break close to home, the city of Dayton will be the home to different activities of different costs held throughout the week of spring break from March 4 through March 8.
