For grade school, high school and college students, Memorial Day might just be another day that school is closed.
But for those who served overseas, it’s more than that.
Memorial Day, which is always the last Monday in May, was originally known as “Decoration Day.” According to www.va.org, Decoration Day was first observed in 1868 by a group of union soldiers.
After World War I, the day began to celebrate veterans of all American wars. In 1917, Congress declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.
In December of 2000, Congress passed and President Clinton signed “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” which encourages people, at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, to have a minute of silence for those who died in the service of the country.
