With her vibrant personality and outgoing demeanor, Sinclair Community College art teacher Bridgette Bogle has been named one of three jurors for the 4th Annual Art and Soul Exhibit.

The Art and Soul Exhibit will be held in the Town and Country Fine Arts Gallery in Kettering, starting April 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. And the exhibit will feature the works of artists with developmental disabilities.

“The art  and soul artist are people who are involved with different programs around the state that has an art making or art therapy component,” Bogle said. “These people are in group homes or in programs and this is part of how they spend their time and spend part of their life.”

During the exhibit, Bogle will join with photographer Bill Woody and director Trish McKinney in deciding who wins the grand prize. The artist with the best work will win a cash prize of more than $200, according to Jodi Hill, development officer for Toward Independence.

One-hundred pieces of artwork will be entered for the exhibit, but the jurors will then deliberate and decide on 40 pieces of art that will be featured in the actual show.

Which Bogle said, is not always an easy task.

“There have been times when each juror has picked a separate piece,” she said. “But that is the cool thing about having three jurors, we get to argue and talk it out. We have to argue for the piece that is special to us or that we enjoy. Sometimes we get to see the other person’s point-of-view.”

Although this is her third year being a juror, she said that the artwork never fails to amaze her.

“The art work is pretty interesting and pretty strong,” she said. “I would say that you don’t necessarily have to be a traditional type to be an artist or trained in a traditional way but all people and from different walks of life can be artistic.”

If interested, Bogle said students can get involved by volunteering, going to the exhibition, checking out the work or meeting the artist.

The event is free and there will be a variety of art for sale during the exhibition, she said. All are welcome to come.

“The exhibit is kind of like a big party with food,” she said. “The artwork will be interesting. It shows a point-of-view different from your own. And that can help you grow as a person.”
