Culinary art students offer baked goods

Culinary Arts students at Sinclair Community College do not want you to miss out on the traditional desserts for your Thanksgiving dinner.

Because of this, the students are having a Thanksgiving Bake Sale that will include traditional Thanksgiving desserts such as pecan, pumpkin, sweet potato and apple pie, as well as a variety of bread/dinner rolls and a pumpkin roll.

These traditional desserts can also be made to order with specifications.

“For example, if a customer has diabetes, we can replace the traditional sugar with Splenda,” said Steven Cornelius, chair/professor of the Culinary Arts Department.

Prices range from $4 – 10 and any student, faculty or staff member can place an order starting Nov. 13 on the Culinary Arts Department website at http://www.sinclair.edu/academics/bps/departments/hmt/bakesale/index.cfm.

The department will stop taking orders on Nov. 17 at noon. Orders will be available for pick up on Wednesday, Nov. 24 between 9 a. m. – 4 p. m. at the demo kitchen on the fourth floor of Building 13.

“This is our big fundraiser of the year for the Culinary Arts program,” said Cornelius. “And it’s a great way for anyone who would like to have a baked pie at their Thanksgiving dinner, to have one.”

The Thanksgiving Bake Sale also serves as a training tool for the students, while allowing them to gain experience that they would not otherwise get until they are working, according to Cornelius.

“Once we have all the orders placed, we can demonstrate to the students how a large production is implemented, and also how the production is performed effectively and professionally,” Cornelius said.
