Intramural sports at the Learning Centers

Sinclair Community College’s Englewood and Huber Heights Learning Centers are sponsoring coed intramural flag football on Sept. 24, at the YMCA field behind the Englewood campus.

Every intramural sport plays on a Friday between 2 and 5 p.m and is entirely free. According to ELC student services advisor Tyrone Curtis, any student or staff member of Sinclair can participate and come and go as they please.

“It’s just friendly competition.  No skill level is required,” Curtis said.

Curtis said the intramurals started last year after his supervisors asked him to.  The sports are in conjunction with student leadership.

“We have a student leadership chapter here, which came after the intramurals,” Curtis said.

It initially started off merely between the Englewood and Huber Heights campuses, but Preble County is also included.

“It’s sort of a competition between the learning centers, so we can have some camaraderie and some fun,” Curtis said.

Curtis started with the sport he said most people wanted to play, which is basketball.  But from there the intramurals have grown to flag football in September and October, basketball from November through March, volleyball in April and softball in May and June.

The football, basketball and volleyball games alternate between Englewood and Huber Heights, with all softball games being played at Preble County.

Dawayne Kirkman, the manager of the Englewood and Huber Heights Learning Centers, enjoys seeing the students come out.

“It can get truly competitive as about 30 to 40 students come out on any given Friday afternoon for flag football,” Kirkman said. “However, at the end of the day, it’s about good fellowship, friends, and fun.”
Curtis and his counterpart in Huber Heights, Evan Kloth, also try and give students important information during halftime of the sports.  Curtis calls these talks “coaches corner.”

“This is a little leadership event where we talk to the students and give them housekeeping items about whatever is going on.  Like registering, being aware of the withdrawal dates,” Curtis said.  “We go over the academic stuff with them.  We go over any upcoming events they need to be aware of, we talk about financial aid and make sure everybody is okay with that.”

The downtown campus will also feature flag football in Building 8 Room L10 on Tuesdays from 1-to-2 p.m., according to physical education faculty Melissa Williams.  There is a $3 fee if students aren’t enrolled in an activities class, and all students participating must have a tartan card.
