Party To Kick Off Fall Registration

Free food, games and a chance to win a scholarship are all part of Midnight Madness, an event to kick off fall registration at Sinclair Community College’s Englewood Learning Center.

The event will be held from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on May 25. It will allow students to register for fall quarter classes, play pool and get the chance to win one of 12 $100 scholarships just by showing up, according to Dawayne Kirkman, manager of the Huber Heights Learning Center.

Kirkman said the event gives students a chance to be the first to register for classes at 12:01 a.m. while allowing them to relax and have a good time.

“The reason why we started this event is because some students still don’t have access to computers at home and they have to wait until the next morning at 8 a.m. when they get to school to register,” Kirkman said. “But by that time some classes they need are at capacity the very first day.”

The event will have 75 computers on site with six to eight advisors to help with student needs. All students are invited to attend.

“Anybody that wants to come, we will be there to assist you,” Kirkman said.

Also the YMCA that is connected to the Englewood Learning Center is allowing the students to use its jukebox, air hockey, foosball and pool tables. The center will have Guitar Hero set up and a root beer pong tournament for students to participate in. The first 150 students to show up will be given a metal carabiner flashlight with the Sinclair logo on it, according to Kirkman.

Alan Tucker, student assistant to Kirkman, has been helping organize the event.

“We have been working really hard to get this event together and getting people signed up to go,” he said. “I am very interested to see what it is going to be like.”

Last year the event had more students than expected and they are hoping even more come out this year, Kirkman said.

“We had about a 150-200 students show up last year and we didn’t expect that many. We were going to be happy if like 50 showed up,” he said. “The person I was co-chairing it with and I came back from picking up wings at BW3’s and the parking lot was full. It was great. We are expecting a much bigger crowd this year.”
