Jazz and poetry will merge once again at the Sports Café in Building 8 when the M.E.L.O. Student Poetry Club holds its second Coffeehouse Showcase of the year.
M.E.L.O. (Mentation Esoteric Lyrical Organization) President Durand Capers said the showcase will feature poetry from club members and non club members, as well as live jazz music from a still to be determined band.
“You’re going to get to see a whole other side of Sinclair that you didn’t even know existed,” Capers said. “You’re going to get some vocal artists, some singers, some poets. Some of them are going to go A cappella and some of them are going to read with the jazz band in the background. They have all those capabilities.”
Capers said anyone who plans on attending can expect a great atmosphere and great performances. M.E.L.O. also plans on featuring an open mic where audience members get the opportunity to perform impromptu poetry, but they must keep it clean.
“Sinclair’s content policy prohibits vulgar language and sexual content,” Capers said. “The college is approximately 80 percent adult, but there are still some kids and there still are some rules for this area.”
Capers said the success of M.E.L.O.’s previous showcase in September and requests from students inspired the second Coffeehouse. The event is schedule for May 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“Even though it’s free, you’re going to get your money’s worth,” Capers said.
