Twelfth Annual Student Art Sale to be held in May

The 12 th Annual Student Art Sale gives Sinclair Community College artists a chance to sell their various pieces of work while raising money for a scholarship fund. Twenty percent of all proceeds from the sale will be donated to the SCC art scholarship fund, Associate Professor Bob Coates said in an e-mail.

Wanda Baer, a 89-year-old graduate and former employee of Sinclair, takes ceramic classes at the college. She said the sale is a good experience for the younger students and is a nice way for her to sell her pieces while giving back.

“I have been doing this for 20 years. It gives people like me a chance to sell what we have made and most importantly helps the student art scholarship fund,” she said. “For younger, regular students it gives them a chance to learn how to price, sell and get some practical experience with selling their pieces. It also gives them some confidence in their work, which I think is great.”

The art scholarship fund is awarded to art students who present a portfolio for review and are approved. The other 80 percent of sales go directly to the artist according to Coates.

The 12th annual Student Art Sale/Raffle will be held on the second floor of Building 13 on May 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and May 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Student’s ceramics, oil and acrylic paintings, prints, photographs, computer art and sculptures will be up for sale said Coates. Prices will run anywhere from $1 to $100. Cash and checks will be accepted only.

Pat Klopfenstein, a student at Sinclair, said that the sale will also have a raffle for which she donates a piece of her work for.

“Usually I donate a piece for the raffle because all of the money goes to the scholarship fund and that is the most important thing. I always try to do something that has different textures, wooden handles or dyed reed,” she said. “I have some ceramic spring bulbs that will be in the sale and I am finishing a vase now.”

Klopfenstein also said that the sale is a great place to buy something exclusive and inexpensive for people during the holidays.

“We hold the sales right before Mothers Day and Winter Break so that students can find something that’s inexpensive, nice and unique,” she said.
