Summer is in full swing and with breaks beckoning for most of us this is THE time to get a bit of gaming done. That’s why release schedules this time of the year are typically stacked and 2024 has been no exception. Here are the most hotly anticipated gaming releases coming out this August:
Bloomburrow, Aug. 2
Magic the Gathering’s latest mainline release takes the multiverse back to a heavily fantasy-inspired setting. After the noire-themed “Murders at Karlov Manor” and the wild-west inspired ‘Outlaws of Thunder Junction’ it’s a return to a far more familiar aesthetic for players. “Bloomburrow” already has fans thinking of “Watership Down” and “Puss n Boots” for its use of anthropomorphic characters.
Warcry: Briar and Bone, Aug. 10
The latest installment in the popular Warhammer: Age of Sigmar skirmish game Warcry is right around the corner. Gamers looking to get in on the action have a great set to start with as the Ossiarch Bonereapers and a Sylvaneth warband clash in the Gnarlwood. If you love miniature building and/or Age of Sigmar you’ll want to keep an eye out on Warcry.
Madden 25, Aug. 16
This annual release is a gaming institution for sports lovers and 2024 should be no different. Whether this edition breaks from the norm and does more than simply update rosters is another story entirely. Still, expect this iteration to sell as well as the others.
Black Myth Wukong, Aug. 20
“Wukong” caused a stir when footage of the game was first teased in 2021 and gamers have been chomping at the bit ever since. The reason is simple: what has been shown promises a graphical powerhouse made with Unreal Engine 5 mixed with the very best action-RPG elements. Is it going to be another flop or will it live up to expectations? It won’t be long before we find out.
Concord, Aug. 23
This is one game people are looking forward to for reasons that may surprise the non-gaming crowd. Live-service style games are trending down lately which is why Sony’s decision to spend millions on another one has gamers confused. After the debacle that was “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”s launch many wonder if this will be the next big live-service flop of the year. Or, potentially, Concord could be a surprise on par with Helldivers 2’s continued success.
Gundam Breaker 4, Aug 29
Robots, especially the Gundam kind, have pride of place here at The Clarion. Few things sound as fun as making one and sending them out to battle against other mobile suit aficionados around the world. That’s what “Gundam Breaker 4” is all about. While it sounds like a match made in heaven, those of us that know our Zakus from GMs are going to keep an eye out for gameplay footage and early reviews. It’s been a long while since fans have been treated to a good Gundam game. Fingers crossed “Gundam Breaker 4” ends the drought.
Star Wars Outlaws, Aug. 30 (PS5, Xbox, PC)
By far the most anticipated game on this list, Ubisoft’s foray into the galaxy far, far away promises the kind of open world sandbox Assassin’s Creed aficionados have come to expect from the company. Few settings offer as much storytelling potential as Star Wars. Given that Outlaws is touted as the first open-world game in the setting, this could very well be a match made in Coruscant.
Those that have come to love the hardscrabble life of smugglers and outlaws that we see in “The Mandolorian” can expect more of the same here. Only instead of Din Djarrin proceedings will be led by players in the boots of the roguish Kay Vess.
