Another major spin-off from the mind of legendary author George R.R. Martin is due to hit the silver screen next year according to a recent post by the wordsmith himself. The show, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, is based on some of Martin’s shorter work set in a Westeros still reeling from the loss of its dragons.
In a post shared on his official website, Martin revealed that the show has already begun filming and would be six episodes long. Instead of depicting the Dance of the Dragons or the War of the Five Kings, this series will follow the legendary exploits of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.
“Filming started last week in Belfast, Northern Ireland,” he wrote. “ Only six episodes for this one. A novella is considerably shorter than a novel (particularly one of my novels), so there’s less source material.”

The series is based on Martin’s novella ‘The Hedge Knight’ which was originally published in 1998 as part of Voyager Books ‘Legends Anthology’. Its characters would quickly become firm favorites with fans around the world. Since then, two other novellas depicting the adventures of Dunk and Egg have been released. All three tales would eventually be collected in the best-selling 2015 collection ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.
A star-studded cast has been revealed by HBO for the new series. Peter Claffey will play Duncan the Tall whilst co-star Dexter Sol Ansell has been cast as Egg. Finn Bennet is due to portray Aerion Brightflame, Tony Award-winner Bertie Carvel has signed up to play Baelor Breakspear, whilst Daniel Ings is scheduled to bring ‘the Laughing Storm’ Lyonel Baratheon to life.
Things look highly promising for Martin’s fans who are currently enjoying a second helping of Targaryen madness in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon.’ Even before its third episode aired the show was renewed for a third season. Alongside Dunk and the hotly anticipated next novel in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series, the world will have plenty to look forward even after the Reds and Greens put down their swords this season.
